Filip: A Smartwatch for Kids

Designed for five to 11 year-olds, Filip is a wearable phone and tracking device that aims to give parents the confidence to allow their children a little more freedom, safe in the knowledge that they can contact each other if needed. As highlighted in Business of Parenting, surveillance is a key technology market for families – particularly with children who are considered too young to own mobile phones.
Filip incorporates GPS, wi-fi and mobile phone tower location technology to track the child’s location. In tandem, these technologies provide more accurate information on the child’s whereabouts than devices that rely on GPS alone. The accompanying app also allows parents to be notified when children leave or arrive at a number of designated ‘safezones’.
The watch can be used to call up to five pre-programmed phone numbers – only these numbers are permitted to call and send text messages to the child through Filip. In the case of an emergency, the child can simply push the red alarm button; this trigger calls each of the five contacts in turn until one of them answers, and starts an audio recording of the child’s surroundings.
Designed to be robust enough to survive the everyday wear and tear of a child’s life, the watch is oversized and chunky in shape. It is available in four vividly coloured plastic finishes and is water resistant.
